– pH balanced, won’t remove acid mantle from skin, which is your biggest organ and your first defense against infection). No soap scum The term "soap free" really means detergent free. The skin is the largest organ in the body. It helps regulate body temperature, removes excess fluid and is the body’s first defense against infection. Aging can reduce its elasticity. As long as the skin is supple, any creasing, such as from smiling, immediately disappears as soon as an expression disappears from the face. Over time creases deepen into wrinkles. Everyone experiences skin changes as they age, but the natural process of aging isn’t the only thing that can change the way skin looks. Sunshine is healing for skink but sunshine can be detrimental to skin., especially if one’s diet is poor. Add to bad diet the use of strong chemicals from soap and you can accelerate aging. In 37AD Pliny the Elder wrote an Encyclopedia in ancient Rome. He said that Soap was invented by the Gauls of Western Europe in 900 BC. They used it to increase gloss in hair. Historically, soap was made in the home by mixing animal fats with lye, a common name for the chemicals, sodium hydroxide (soda lye) or potassium hydroxide (potash). Soap is by definition made from natural substances. Although the soap term continues to be used informally in everyday speech and product labels, in practice nearly all kinds of "soap" in use today are actually detergents or synthetic substances. Soap being a basically organic substance, is sort of alive. Soap can decay over time by natural engagement with the substances of its environment. It can become weaker as a detergent can not. Water has surface tension. A drop of water stays on a counter. Soap is a surfactant, which means soap cuts the surface tension of water. Soap makes water wetter so it will touch more surfaces. When it touches more surfaces, on a molecular level, soap will grab the non-polar molecules of grease so they can be rinsed away. Soaps are useful for cleansing because soap molecules attach to both non-polar molecules (grease) and polar molecules (water). Grease will adhere to skin or clothing. Soap molecules attach to grease as a "handle" and make it easier to rinse away. Most commercial soap is actually detergent. If you wash with a detergent bar of soap your natural body oils are removed. This is why when you use a commercial soap you leave the shower or bath feeling dry, your skin is tight, and you feel the need for lotion. Detergent soaps are made from synthetic chemicals produced in a lab, usually from petroleum products. Non-detergent soaps, which we call "non-soaps" or "true soaps," are made from naturally- occurring ingredients such as animal fats, vegetable fats and lye. Non-detergent soaps like Shaklee’s Meadow Blend bar leave your natural body oils in place while removing daily soil and odor. Your body produces oils to shield you from invading bacteria. You should only let true soap touch your body. Then your own body's healthy oils remain in place to keep your skin supple and vigorous. |
