The Shaklee Bestwater filter makes pharmaceutical grade water with reverse osmosis.

Reverse osmosis, also known as hyperfiltration, is the finest filtration known. This process will allow the removal of particles as small as ions from a solution. Reverse osmosis is used to purify water and remove salts and other impurities in order to improve the color, taste or properties of the fluid. It can be used to purify fluids such as ethanol and glycol, which will pass through the reverse osmosis membrane, while rejecting other ions and contaminants from passing. The most common use for reverse osmosis is in purifying water. It is used to produce water that meets the most demanding specifications that are currently in place.

RO is the most convenient and effective method of water filtration. It filters water by squeezing water through a semi-permeable membrane, which is rated at 0.0001 micron (equals to 0.00000004 inch). This is the technology used to make bottled water, it is also the only technology capable of desalinating sea water, making it into drinking water.

Non-RO water filters are much less effective. The pore size of any non-RO filter is much bigger, generally 0.5 - 10 micron. A non-RO can stop coarse particles, sediments and elements only up to its micron rating. Most dissolved substances cannot be filtered out. As a result, non-RO water is far less clean and safe compared to reverse osmosis filtered water.

The types of water purification (from Eden Engineering)
  • Disinfection by adding chemicals such as chlorine, ultraviolet light, or ozone
  • Filtration, including activated carbon filters removes some solids (Brita)
  • Reverse osmosis - sophisticated membrane – mineral free
  • Distillation: boil the water – mineral free
  • Ion exchange (water softeners) &nquot;Resin medium&nquot; removes dissolved salts in the water, such as calcium. Softens the water or exchanges natural forming mineral ions in the water with its own ions, thereby neutralizing their harmful effect of creating scale build-up. Uses no electricity. Used in boilers and other industry related situations. Ideal when used in conjunction with other filter mediums such a carbon.
  • Poly Phosphate: Changes the Hardness Chemically so minerals do not corrode or stick inside pipes. Removes Heavy Metals such as Lead & Mercury but not necessarily germs.
  • Iodine resin: for disaster relief - Kills germs.
Are you a mineral or mineral-free water drinker? You better be a mineral free drinker.

In 1993 the EPA said 800 US cities had dangerous levels of lead & copper in water affecting 30 million people. The Environmental Protection Agency offers a service. www.epa.gov Enter your zip code. You can discover your own town’s watershed. This Website lists local polluting facilities affecting groundwater in your locale. This indicates the challenges that your municipal water supplier faces in providing tap water.

In 1999 the USGS found at least 31 antibiotics (eg. Tetracycline and Sulfamethazine) and anti bacterial compounds in water samples as well as traces of at least 11 compounds linked to birth control and hormone supplements. Environmental exposure to such substances has caused deformed sex organs in wildlife and fish, and declining fertility in humans, as well as cancers and other diseases.

In March of 1999 the NRDC tested 103 brands of bottled water. 33% exceeded bacteria guidelines or state standards for contaminants.

Getting pure water is not as easy as turning on the tap or buying bottled water. You need a filter you can trust.

You may have the cleanest looking, purest tasting water around that comes from a pristine well 1000 feet below the ground or from some untouched mountain top stream, but that doesn't guarantee anything. Too many chemicals have been introduced over the years, especially through industry and agriculture. Researchers have even found DDT residue in Antarctica snow. Most of these pollutants have no taste or odor, making them impossible to detect by the water drinker. Federal and state agencies have been set up to help with this problem. One thing is for sure, no one wants to get poisoned.

Brita is the leading water filter/pitcher system on the market.   Brita uses 2 stages (and claims to use 3: sieve – carbon / ion exchange)

The National Sanitation Foundation International (NSF) tested Brita in 2002 (Brita Ultra 2).   The below figures make Brita less attractive. Their 2005 claims seem to include higher scores, though still worse than BestWater.

Brita removes 90% of chlorine
Shaklee Bestwater removes 95% of chlorine

Brita removes 93% of lead
Shaklee Bestwater removes 98% of lead

Brita removes 98% of particles down to 30 microns
Shaklee Bestwater removes 98% of particles down to 15 microns

Brita adds silver to retard bacteria growth.
Shaklee Bestwater adds no silver and instead advises refrigeration in order to retard bacteria growth.

Note: Not all NSF references are equal. Some products are “tested to NSF standards.” This means that a laboratory tested the product using NSF test procedures. Full NSF certification includes:

Evaluation of materials used in construction to verify nothing toxic is added to the water. Performance testing to full ANSI (American National Standards Institute) standards. Review of products literature to verify performance is stated fairly and is not misleading. Verification that a quality control program is in place at the manufacturing site.
